Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852–1889) was an inventor who revolutionized the shoe manufacturing industry with his creation of the automatic shoe-lasting machine. Born in Suriname, he demonstrated an early talent for machinery and eventually moved to the United States, settling in Lynn, Massachusetts. There, he worked in the shoe industry and dedicated years to developing a machine that could automate the process of attaching a shoe’s upper to its sole. Patented in 1883, his invention significantly increased production efficiency, making quality footwear more affordable. Despite his success, Matzeliger's life was cut short by tuberculosis at the age of 36.
