Credit to @slash repost from @thelegendsofmusic John Williams conducting the National Symphony Orchestra for a stellar performance of “The Imperial March (Darth Vaders Theme)” at his 90th Birthday Celebration Few pieces of film music have achieved the cultural prominence of The Imperial March by John Williams. Known for introducing one of the greatest villains in cinema history, this theme is composed in G minor and it’s highlighted by it’s rhythmic pulse and bold brass fanfares, which are led by it’s blaring trombones and trumpets. However, it does beg the question, what were his inspirations to create this masterpiece? To begin with John Williams took inspiration from a combination of classical music traditions, military marches, and the narrative demands of the Star Wars saga. However, his biggest classical music inspiration was famed German composer Richard Wagner. In fact, John himself confirmed this in an interview saying: “People say they hear Wagner in Star Wars, and I can only think, It’s not because I put it there. Now, of course, I know that Wagner had a great influence on Korngold and all the early Hollywood composers. Wagner lives with us here—you can’t escape it. I have been in the big river swimming with all of them.” In fact, it was Richard Wagner’s use of leitmotifs Similar to how Wagner’s operas, particularly Der Ring des Nibelungen, use distinct musical phrases to signify characters like Siegfried or the Valkyries, The Imperial March functions as a leitmotif for Darth Vader and the overarching power of the Galactic Empire. Another influence that prevailed was Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets, particularly the movement Mars, the Bringer of War. The aggressive, rhythmic use of brass and percussion in Mars closely mirrors the militaristic tone of The Imperial March. Finally, it’s very admirable how John tailored The Imperial March to embody Darth Vader’s complex character. iiii]; )'
