I just found an Echidna!!! 🫢😲 Found exclusively in Australia and New Guinea, echidnas belong to the monotreme family, which means they are one of only five known species of egg-laying mammals. These creatures, along with their distant cousin, the platypus, possess a rather curious reproductive system. Female echidnas lay a single soft-shelled egg, which is then incubated in a pouch on their abdomen. Once hatched, the baby echidna, called a puggle, completes its development by suckling milk secreted from specialized mammary glands on the mother's skin. This combination of mammalian and reptilian characteristics makes echidnas truly remarkable. What catches the eye immediately about echidnas is their unique appearance. Covered in dense, coarse hair, they possess sharp spines that punctuate their body, providing them an effective defense against predators. These spines, though somewhat similar in appearance to those of a porcupine, are completely different in structure and composition. Made from modified hairs, these spines are actually elongated, hollow, and made of keratin, just like our fingernails. This adaptation allows echidnas to forage for food in tight spaces, using their spines as tools to push soil and debris away to get to their favorite prey - ants and termites. As for their behavior, echidnas are mostly solitary animals, preferring the solitude of their own company. They are excellent diggers and spend a significant amount of time burrowing underground, seeking refuge from harsh weather conditions or potential predators. Additionally, echidnas are known for their ability to swim, making them versatile in their search for food sources across their natural habitat. @vintagefoodfarm #spikey #hiding #tropicalfruit #fnq #poultry #kitchengarden #raisedgardenbeds #native #foodforest #tropics #cute #selfsufficient #herbs #veggiegarden #homegrown #cairns #organic #marsupial #animal #monotreme #echidna #gardening #permaculture #speewah #vintagefoodfarm
