🇲🇳 Mongolia | Trans-Mongolian Railway: With the Soviet Train from Ulaanbaatar to Zamyn-Üüd (Chinese Border) covering 704km. I love night trains and especially the famous Russian long distance trains (I traveled Munich-Vladivostok and back, some years ago). Actually the carriages were build in the former GDR (East Germany) in the city of Ammendorf near Halle/Saale but they still operate in Mongolia with all the vintage interior and wooden frames! It was like train travel 40 years ago and I really enjoyed my overnight trip in the Luks class, which has only 2 beds in one compartment (I have to admit, I travelled Platzkartny already several times). The ride was really smooth and it was great to enjoy the Mongolian steppe outside despite the rain. Unfortunately the dining car was crowded and I couldn’t get a seat. The second attempt later that night was unsuccessful, because the dining car closes at 9p even for drinks. So I went to the samovar (hot water is available in all cars the whole time) to get some instant noodles and tea! So dinner was saved. Next morning we arrived in Zamy-Üüd in time and most of the people travel further to China. I stayed some hours in the border town at the famous coffee shop Coffee Bene to prepare myself for the next days in China. . Some facts about the ride: Departure 4.40p // Arrival 7.20a (next day +1) Consists of 4 different categories: -Luks (one compartment 2 beds) -Kupe soft sleeper (one compartment 4 beds) -Platzkartny hard sleeper ( 6 beds and open compartment) -Obtschy hard seats (actually like platzkartny with 9 people not the same space) Ticket: 7 EUR for the whole ride in the cheapest category // Most expansive one 36 EUR . Actually trains are very popular, because they are super cheap so rebooking is essential to get a bed/seat. I highly recommend TAPAtrip for online bookings.
