I think John understood the love of Jesus better than the others because he saw the depths Jesus suffered with his own eyes. When the other disciples fled, he stayed and witnessed Jesus’ love in a way they didn’t. Not just words but thirty-nine lashes from a Roman whip, when Jesus could have called down ten legions of angels to save him. Not just promises but willingly taking nails in his hands & feet, a crown of thorns on His head. Hours before, at the last supper, Jesus said, “there is no greater act of love than a man laying down his life for his friend…” And then John watched Jesus do just that. Not just physically, but he saw His lord’s spirit suffer. He saw his anguish and loneliness as he cried “My God; why have you forsaken me?” I know this broke him. I know he walked away from that cross another person. Someone weak and tender and deeply in love as much he was deeply in grief. No one really talks about the love of Jesus the way John does. Read his letter 1st John’s I see what I mean. And we know from the gospels that before this John was different. He was much more intense. Someone passionate and loyal but very quick to wrath. But after, he carries a gentleness and mercy in his words I have not felt from the writings of the others. That’s why I so often meditate on Jesus’ crucifixion. Because we have to fully comprehend the depths of his suffering to fully comprehend the depths of His love. And I wanna know His love like John did. ❤️ #webtoon #animate #christiantiktok #BookTok #brothers
