Caiman vs gator! What are some of the differences? Can they live together? Spectacled caiman are native to central and South America but were introduced into south Florida through the pet trade. They have been established in fourth Florida since the 1950s. As an invasive species, they pose a threat to native wildlife by competing for habitat and prey, further complicating the delicate ecosystem of the Florida Everglades. When found they are typically destroyed and itā€™s illegal to keep them in Florida without a permit, but since I have permits we are able to take him in at the sanctuary! ~~~Our rescue gators are wild caught nuisance gators that wouldā€™ve otherwise been destroyed. The state of Florida destroys 8,000 ā€œnuisanceā€ gators annually, but we donā€™t have a nuisance gators problem but rather a nuisance HUMAN problem. 1k people a day move to FL, unsustainably developing the land, and a lot of ignorant people making a nuisance out of themselves. NEVER feed a wild gator, never have kids or pets near the water, and never swim in gator habitat! And of course, never attempt anything you see in my videos! If you would like to donate to the care of the sanctuary animals, we greatly appreciate any support!! When youā€™ve got a gator by the tail, remember they can spin right around and bite your hand on the tail! This is something I teach early on when training an apprentice, I often see people get tunnel vision and death grip the tail, forgetting the gator will turn around and bite its own tail with your hand on it! Iā€™ve seen this almost happen many times. Or they hold too tight and the force of the spin can throw you off balance or into the jaws. I donā€™t often get to show off my wild gator handling skills anymore since my focus is now on rescue and training, but itā€™s fun to remember my gladiator daysšŸŠ. Gaston was showing how excited he was for surgery yesterday! After this I caught him and we taped him up and had a successful surgery removing the foreign body in his colon. This was filmed in landscape, and Iā€™ll have the full video of the day out in a week or so. ~~~Our rescue gators are wild caught nuisance gators that wouldā€™ve otherwise been destroyed.
