YOUR PERMISSION RULES MAY HAVE BEEN WEAKER THAN THEY LOOKED. Claude Code 2.1.289 fixes several paths that could prevent deny and approval rules from behaving as intended. The update closes three especially important gaps: 1. Nested compound commands A deny or ask rule attached to part of a compound shell command now continues to hold when a user-installed mod requests approval on a managed machine. 2. Environment-prefixed commands Bash rules could miss a command when it was preceded by an environment-variable assignment, particularly when sandbox auto-allow was active. Version 2.1.289 repairs both expanded-value and bare-assignment cases. WHY IT MATTERS Permission systems must evaluate what a command actually executes, not just the simplest visible form of the command. Compound syntax, environment prefixes, and filesystem indirection can all create gaps between the policy you wrote and the action the agent performs. This release does not make unattended coding agents automatically safe. It does make Claude Code's existing review boundaries more dependable. PRACTICAL CHECK Run: claude --version If the installed version is older than 2.1.289, update Claude Code before the next autonomous or managed-machine session. After updating, use a disposable repository to verify that: 1. A denied command remains blocked inside a compound command 2. A denied command remains blocked after an environment-variable assignment 3. A denied file cannot be read through a symlink 4. Organization-managed MCP sign-in descriptions cannot be altered by a user plugin Keep the test harmless. Use temporary files and commands that only print a message or create disposable test data.
