Day 10/92. New York was officially called New Amsterdam until the British seized it in 1664 and renamed it after the Duke of York. The city was never the capital of the US in the traditional sense, but it was here in 1789 that George Washington took his oath as the first president, and New York remained the nation's first capital until 1790. The famous Statue of Liberty was a gift from France in 1886, but its copper shell was originally bright brown and only turned green after 30 years due to oxidation. The New York City subway is one of the oldest in the world (opened in 1904), and 40% of its stations are actually above ground. The iconic nickname "The Big Apple" was popularized in the 1920s by jazz musicians playing on the phrase "to pick the big apple" — meaning to hit the big jackpot. Today, more than 800 languages are spoken in the city, making it the most linguistically diverse place on the planet. Manhattan used to be hilly, but the original terrain was completely leveled while building its famous street grid. Also, New York hosts the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where giant inflatable characters (like Snoopy or Spider-Man) float between the skyscrapers — a tradition that has been running since 1924. #newyork #newyorkcity #usa #dream #foryou
