An octopus has three hearts and blue blood — and there’s a fascinating reason why. Instead of iron like humans, octopus blood uses copper to carry oxygen. That’s what makes it blue. But copper is much less efficient at transporting oxygen. So to move enough oxygen through their bodies, octopuses evolved three hearts. Two hearts pump blood to the gills to pick up oxygen, and the third pumps it to the rest of the body. But when an octopus swims, its body movement puts so much strain on circulation that the main heart can’t keep up and temporarily stops beating. That’s why octopuses usually crawl along the ocean floor instead of swimming. 🐙 #octopus #animal #sea
