What is TikTok’s newest problematic trend ‘The Great Indian Shift’? And why is it causing so much controversy online? Let’s get into it. All over TikTok, hundreds of videos have started to emerge under the hashtag ‘The Great Shift’ or ‘The Great Indian Shift’,’ where users seem to be suddenly thirsting for Indian and South Asian people, specifically women. Vague comments are also being left under videos made by South Asian people, saying that they’re “shifting.” But what does shifting mean? Some South Asian users have encouraged the trend, saying that it’s about time the world starts finding people from South Asia attractive. Others are more critical, calling the trend eurocentric and shallow towards a group of marginalized people that have historically been treated with disdain and racism. Only earlier this year, a trend emerged on TikTok involving people being asked ‘what race would you not date,’ with an overwhelming amount saying Indian as an answer. The flip from this to ‘The Great Shift’ has not been lost on TikTok users, with many arguing that South Asian and Indian people have always been attractive, and the recent ‘Great Indian Shift’ is nothing more than a Western fad designed to fetishise those from South Asia, and that the trend is inherently problematic. The trend is also under fire for only promoting the attractiveness of people with eurocentric features. Similar trends have also happened in the past to other people of colour. This clip about original ‘Great Shift’ - “It’s just crazy to me how everybody was hating in unison and they didn’t even know it. Everybody was tapped into the hating dark skinned trend. And then out of nowhere, a miraculous event happened. It’s just like god just bestowed a blessing upon , a phenomenon that we know now as the great shift happened.” This clip explaining original ‘Great Shift’. Despite the controversy, some South Asian users are jumping on the trend by posting under ‘The Great Indian Shift’ hashtag, racking up thousands of likes.
