@ceramicvideo @omelettrees.studio Very honestly, slab building is one of the more tedious processes in our studio, which means we don’t indulge it in very often. First, it takes quite a bit of planning to get proportions and measurements right. We usually make a paper template, stick it together, re-adjust the measurements to account for clay shrinkage, before committing to the form. Then comes cutting out all the tiny little slabs, beveling the edges, score, slip, join, and reinforce... (I missed out on videoing that part) So here’s our learning, this time round: While everything dried up beautifully and survived the bisque well, glaze firing was pretty unpredictable. We’d be very honest to say that hairline cracks did emerge, and yes- warping (our nemesis 🥲) We studied our huts and realised that we had to be more selective with the quality of clay we used. Grittier, sandier slabs made with bottom of the barrel clay didn’t hold up well compared to the finer, smoother clay sieved out in the beginning. I’m glad we gave them a go, nonetheless. So while we won’t be selling these Kiln Huts, they still speak of the story behind the roaring brick trade of our past. And we’re happy, of course, that they get to hang out at @reroutefest with works from our potter friends @studioasobi and @minjuandjeff !
