1. There is no stability anymore. Growing up in an asian family with immigrant parents, I was told to get good grades, go to a good school, and find a good job. I did all of that and started working at my dream job, Google, right out of college. I started work during peak tech layoffs in 2022, I knew layoffs were possible but it didn’t feel real until it finally happened to me. If you think there is stability at your job, please think again. Most of us are replaceable but the bright side? It is easier now than ever to build something for yourself through social media and my only regret is not starting earlier 2. It’s not a matter of if but when you will be laid off. 4 years ago when I graduated, I thought Google was the most STABLE job ever. AI is disrupting many industries, tech, finance, healthcare and if you are in corporate, you will be impacted. Don’t wait for it to happen before you react like me, be proactive. Keep building your skills, learn new ones, and NEVER be complacent. 3. Don’t tie your identity to work. I’ve been told this a lot since being laid off but if you worked your whole life towards something, it’s natural for it to become your identity. When I was let go, I felt an overwhelming sense of loss because I didn’t know who I was anymore. I prided myself as a hard worker and didn’t have much hobbies outside of work, but I’m so thankful I started creating content before which gave me a sense of having something that was mine. 4. You need to build something for yourself. Now more than ever with AI, everything is changing and fast. You can lose your “stable” job and your identity overnight. You need to start building something that no one can take away and the good news is, you can start doing that while working your job. Social media has made it easier than ever to build. Create, post, and document. I’m so glad that I started building for myself so that when I lost my job, I still had something. I know now more than ever, many people are experiencing layoffs or are afraid their next. I feel you and I’m navigating it myself. I hope this helps at least a little and that you join me for the ride #career #20s #mindset
