As a chemist I would like to point out that everything is a chemical reaction. Also, most cloth today is made with dye that doesn't bleed.

It’s most likely dye. Most of my clothes when I buy them say the dye will come out a little in washes. Now you see the dirty water before it drains.

if you really wanna prove to em it ain't a chemical reaction you could do the mix with no laundry. scoop up some in a cup and then add the laundry.

Note she said 5 hours. ANY dyes after 5 hours. will bleed. And if you follow your roygbiv yeah its gonna look grey to black. Lye works wonders.

It’s not a chemical reaction. It’s buildup of oils, detergents, and softeners. 90% of people use TOO MUCH especially if they have HE washers
