A cesarean section (C-section) is a major surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incisions in the mother's abdomen and uterus. Performed for medical necessity or electively, usually around 39 weeks, it involves regional anesthesia (spinal or epidural). The procedure takes 40-50 minutes, with recovery taking 4-6 weeks. Why a C-section is Performed Planned (Elective): Scheduled due to breech position (feet down), placenta previa (placenta covers uterus opening), twins/multiples, or previous C-section . Emergency: Performed when labor poses risks to the baby or mother, such as fetal distress, obstructed labor, or umbilical cord issues. Procedure Details Anesthesia: Most commonly spinal or epidural anesthesia allows the mother to be awake. General anesthesia is used in urgent cases. Incision: A horizontal cut, known as a "bikini cut," is usually made in the lower abdomen. Delivery: The doctor removes the baby, cuts the umbilical cord, and then removes the placenta. Closure: The uterus and abdominal incision are stitched up. Recovery Hospital Stay: Typically 1 to 4 days, longer than a vaginal delivery. Incision Care: Keep the wound clean and dry, watching for signs of infection. Activity: Walking is encouraged early to prevent blood clots, but heavy lifting should be avoided. Pain Management: Painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen are commonly used. Recovery time: Full recovery often takes 4 to 6 weeks. Risks While generally safe, C-sections carry higher risks than vaginal births, including infection, bleeding, blood clots, and potential breathing issues for the baby! #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #fypage
