Here is why this can be harmful👇 I get it! You DO just want your teen to be happy, it’s the age old parenting mantra… And you’re allowed to think it…to an extent… but here’s why it’s harmful to say it out loud to your teenager (and even think it). It’s an unrealistic expectation, 100% of the time! Let’s normalize all the range of emotions. At its root, the phrase “I just want you to be happy” has good intentions, but it’s misguided because it leads your teen think something is wrong if they’re not always happy. And if they know, that is your ultimate hope, and expectation, they may want to protect you from their unhappy. Or fear you’ll give that “silver linings” pep talk (that invalidates frustration or sadness). Drawbacks to “I just want you to be happy” ❌pressure to conform ❌ invalidates negative emotions ❌ difficulty expressing true feelings ❌ unrealistic expectations Try saying this instead… “I want you to be engaged with life” “I want you to be healthy and balanced in your emotions” “It’s OK to feel a range of emotions, and I’m here to support you through all of them” Moms are uncomfortable when they see their teenager is not happy, I want to normalize for you that you can sit in this discomfort and teach them how to do it as well. 👉What do you think, will you give us a try? 🛟SAVE this to have a conversation with your teenager and family about feeling all the range of emotions. #parentingteenagers #teenagers
