Tensions were high during the Suzuka Grand Prix in Japan on October 22, 1989. Ayrton Senna had to win the last two races of the season to take the championship. Otherwise, his teammate Alain Prost would win the crown. It all came to a head on lap 46. Senna had pole position, but Prost quickly took the lead after the start. He dominated the first half of the race, but the tide turned once the Brazilian pitted for soft tires. He caught up to Prost, and as he made his dive to the inside on turn 16, Senna and the Frenchman's cars caught each other and came to a halt. Though Prost's car was disabled in the crash, Senna was able to continue on thanks to some assistance from the marshals, and went on to win the race, keeping his championship hopes alive... or so he thought. Senna was disqualified after the race for failing to go through the chicane while re-entering the track after the incident. The decision handed Alessandro Nannini the race win, and Prost the championship victory. McLaren tried to appeal to no avail, and Senna was eventually handed a hefty fine and a six-month ban from the sport. The ensuing political chaos accused the FIA of showing favoritism to Prost, which he later denied. Senna actually quit F1 in protest before eventually coming back to the sport.
