Dubbed the “habitual home of whale sharks,” the pristine, plankton-rich waters of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity to ethically interact with these gentle giants, locally known as “Tiki-Tiki.” With strict rules such as a no-feeding policy and maintaining a distance of at least 3 to 4 meters from the whale shark's body and at least 5 meters from its tail, Pintuyan has established itself as an ethical boutique marine tourism destination, attracting both local and foreign tourists through its strong commitment to biodiversity conservation. Visitors are required to be accompanied by tourist guides and spotters trained and registered by the Department of Tourism Regional Office VIII, whether they choose to swim with whale sharks or ride a pump boat. The entire activity package costs around P3,000. According to Carlito Mosut, president of the Sun-ok Spotters and Tour Guides Association in Pintuyan, they typically see three to five whale sharks swimming freely in the town's coastal waters. Chance encounters with tiki-tiki are more likely during the species' peak season, from October to May. Aside from the no-feeding and distancing rules, tourists are prohibited from touching, riding, or blocking the whale sharks' path to ensure safe and responsible interactions with these animals. Since 2006, whale shark interaction activities in Pintuyan have become a sustainable livelihood for residents, stemming from a conservation initiative aimed at ending the Panaon Island region’s history of whale shark hunting. Until the late 1990s, whale sharks were targeted by fisheries in the country before the species was protected under Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 193, according to the Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines (LAMAVE). Classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2016, whale sharks face an uncertain future, underscoring the need to promote and uphold the sustainable tourism practices that Pintuyan continues to champion.
