Aclassic Raw Story with 🏄‍♂️ @benny_haddad1 and 🎥 @ready2fly_imagens_aereas This was an outer reef on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii the morning of the Eddie. I was riding a 10’7 Kirk Bierke gun. @kirkbierke.surfboards I’d describe the break itself as a deep-water version of cloud break. The reef doesn’t change in depth significantly throughout the line-up which means the bigger waves break a lot further out than the insiders making it very easy to get caught inside if you aren’t cautious. I hadn’t been in the line-up for long, maybe 15 minutes before I had to swim through the one from the drone footage. I was in awe paddling towards it. I’d never seen a wave so big and so perfect that close to landing on my head! I swam through it fine and managed to stay relatively relaxed all things considered. The other wave was the first one I caught out there, I was sitting on the inside and it came right to me. I put my head down and paddled as hard as I could. As the wave stood up and picked me up with it there was a strong wind coming up the face purely created by the wave travelling forward at such a high speed. I haven’t had a lot of experience with trying to paddle into deep, open ocean waves. They travel much faster than the Aussie slabs from home! There was this moment where I felt like I wasn’t going to make it into the wave, but I ended up catching it. I grabbed rail and stayed low and tried to gun it to the bottom which felt like forever! The wave didn’t feel that big or scary while I was on it, everything just felt a lot more drawn out and slower. It felt like it took years to get to the bottom, then years to drive across and years to pull out the back. I was stoked to get one under my belt but I didn’t have very long to celebrate as the one behind it was a bomb and I got smoked hahha! That day was probably the most memorable day of my life so far. To be in Hawaii for an Eddie and be able to surf the swell with good mates Tyler Bartlett and Ollie Dousset and meet a bunch of amazing people not only from Hawaii but all over the world, that’ll stay close to my heart forever! Aclassic #surf #surflife #wipeout #surfphotography #wow #story #surfstyle
