Giorgio Morandi was an Italian painter born in 1890. He specialized in still-life paintings, and his style was influenced by the Italian classical school, Géricault, Cézanne, and Cubism. His distinctive use of color—known as "Morandi colors"—is particularly representative of his work. He predominantly used low-saturation, soft intermediate tones such as various shades of white, beige, gray, and brown. These colors were combined to create a calm and elegant atmosphere. However, the Qing Dynasty in China was established in 1644 (not 1616), and the increasing complexity of clothing design began during the Kangxi period (1654) and reached its peak and full maturity under the Qianlong Emperor. The dynasty had four imperial textile and dyeing bureaus: Jiangning Weizuo, Suzhou Weizuo, Hangzhou Weizuo (collectively known as the "Three Southern Textile Bureaus"), and the Beijing Nei Weizuo. These institutions were primarily responsible for supplying textiles used within the imperial court for trade, ceremonies, and bestowals. The color names recorded in the *Qing Huidian* (Imperial Code of the Qing) often included common names of animals, plants, or everyday objects for definition, such as fish-white, moon-white, lake-blue, lotus-pink, rose-purple, indigo, golden-yellow, persimmon-yellow, apricot-yellow, safflower-yellow, peach-red, flame-red, silver-red, fish-red, oil-green, bean-green, pine-blossom-green, leather-green, antique-bronze, as well as beige and camel-color. Although these color terms are vivid and easy to understand, they carry a certain degree of ambiguity. These colors were not created arbitrarily but were derived from natural dyes. Pigments were extracted from plant roots, stems, leaves, and other parts to make dye solutions, into which fabrics were then immersed to achieve coloration. This type of coloring agent is known as vegetable dye, and the process of dyeing with it is called "grass dyeing."#museum #travelchina #ancienthistory #china
