If you grew up with emotionally immature or dysregulated parents, you might have gotten a lot of attention and still not had much room for your own feelings and needs. To survive in these environments, we might have developed patterns like intellectualizing, overfunctioning, people pleasing, or feeling like we needed to fix everyone else’s emotions. We had to create a mask, learning to be what other people wanted us to be so we could stay in connection. And that mask was made up of all the predictions and adaptations our brains created based on experiences we had, what happened when we had needs, when we felt angry, or when we wanted something different than our caregivers. We learned what we needed to hide away and who we needed to become to keep feeling loved and connected. And even now, a part of you might say, but they did so much for me, how can I feel this way? We can notice that too, while getting curious about what it was like for us and what we needed but didn’t get. Over time, we can pay attention to ourselves in a new way and update our brains so that we no longer have to hide behind the mask. #intellectualization #developmentaltrauma #adultchildrenofemotionallyimmatureparents #experientialtherapy #cptsd
