Yes, using Dawn dish detergent in a carpet cleaning machine can "mess up" the machine by producing excessive foam, which can clog the motor and hoses. While a tiny amount of Dawn (a few drops) is excellent for manual spot treatment because of its grease-cutting abilities, it should not be used in high-volume cleaning machines.
