Supernova Explosion ! In this cool animation from NASA, we can see a supernova—the spectacular event at the end of the lifetime of a star that is at least eight times larger than our Sun. As shifting pressures within its core trigger a collapse, the star explodes in a brilliant supernova, one of the universe's largest explosions. Although such events are rare in the Milky Way, with the last one observed by Johannes Kepler in 1604, they are frequently spotted in other galaxies through powerful telescopes like NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. The initial flash of light from a supernova can outshine its host galaxy and may last only seconds, but it marks the beginning of a phenomenon that can be studied for millennia. The debris flung into space by the explosion is rich in elements like carbon and oxygen—essential ingredients for life as we know it. This animation not only captures the explosion's stunning brightness but also follows the evolving cloud of material that continues to enrich the cosmic environment long after the initial flash has faded. Watch the video to see the dramatic life-ending event of a star and the beginning of new cosmic possibilities. Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Video courtesy of ESA/Hubble/L.
