Nelly Uzonna Edith Uchendu, popularly known as Nelly Uchendu, was a Nigerian singer, composer and actress who became one of the most distinctive female voices in the history of Igbo highlife and Nigerian popular music. She was born in 1950 in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of present-day Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria. From an early age, Uchendu developed a passion for singing and eventually pursued music professionally in an industry largely dominated by men. Her musical development was influenced by her association with Professor Sonny Oti’s music group. This experience helped her grow as a performer and prepared her for a career that would make her one of Nigeria’s respected female musicians. Her major breakthrough came in 1976 with the release of “Love Nwantiti.” The song became a major success and introduced her to a much wider Nigerian audience. Her remarkable vocal ability earned her the nickname “The Lady with the Golden Voice,” a name that remained closely associated with her. What made Uchendu particularly important was the way she approached Igbo music. She did not simply reproduce traditional songs.
