Some caregivers aren’t tired because the work is hard. They’re tired because they’ve been carrying everybody’s part. There comes a point in caregiving when helping can quietly turn into carrying. You start with “I’ll take care of this.” Then it becomes “Don’t worry, I’ll handle that too.” And before you know it, you are carrying the appointments, the phone calls, the family disagreements, the emergencies, the guilt, the worry—and sometimes even responsibilities that belonged to somebody else. I know this because I spent years doing it. And one of the hardest lessons I had to learn was this: Being capable of carrying something does not mean it belongs in your hands. Sometimes asking for help means saying, “I cannot do this part alone anymore.” Sometimes it means calling the family together. Sometimes it means asking what resources are available. Sometimes it means finally admitting, “This is becoming too much for one person.” That is not failure. Because when you carry the whole tray long enough, eventually something spills—and too often, the caregiver is the one who gets lost in the cleanup. So yes, caregiver… You can set the tray down.
