He cautions them to be as shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves (Matthew 10:16). For one who may not use the word shrewd often, it may mean something derogatory, but essentially it means to be super focused or aware of a situation and using sound practical judgement. In this verse from Colossians, I think it is reminding us to be shrewd of those we follow and caution us not to follow blindly regardless of a person’s status or position. Just because they hold a powerful position or a position reserved for those of trustworthiness, honor, and duty, should not give them a free pass from you (us) to blindly follow. Instead, trust but verify. Be shrewd. In this particular case, know your Bible. Set aside time to dig into it, even if it’s a few chapters a day. Remain diligent in reading His word and pray for clarity and wisdom so that you may interpret His word correctly…for yourself. This includes me! Do not take my word for it, for I am just writing what I feel is the intent, as best I can. It is difficult to forego the basic principles of this world, therefore we must hold true to God’s word as best we can, ask for forgiveness when we miss the mark, and improve daily, even if it resulted in one step backwards and two steps forward; we still ended with progression towards Him.
