Global Workforce by Sector 1950-2025 The biggest career shift in human history — visualized. 75 years of the global workforce migrating from farms to factories to offices. Every dot = 0.1% of all workers on Earth. 📊 WHAT THIS SHOWS Three clusters representing the three economic sectors. Each dot = 0.1% of the global working population. As time advances, dots migrate between clusters as workers shift occupations across generations. • AGRICULTURE — farming, fishing, forestry, livestock • INDUSTRY — manufacturing, construction, mining, utilities • SERVICES — retail, transport, finance, health, education, tech, government, hospitality The three shares always sum to 100%. The visualization is not about absolute numbers (the global workforce grew from ~1.1 billion in 1950 to ~3.6 billion in 2025) — it's about the RATIOS between sectors. 📂 DATA SOURCES • 1991–2025: Our World in Data / International Labour Organization (ILO) modeled estimates via World Bank WDI — 'Employment in agriculture / industry / services (% of total employment)'. ILOSTAT ID: EMP_DWAP_SEX_ECO_NB_A • 1950–1990: Linear interpolation between 5 decadal anchor points drawn from ILO Yearbook of Labour Statistics (various editions 1967, 1977, 1986), World Bank World Development Report 1987, Colin Clark 'Conditions of Economic Progress' (1957), and Broadberry & O'Rourke 'Cambridge Economic History of Modern Europe'. Anchors: 1950 (70/16/14), 1960 (65/18/17), 1970 (57/20/23), 1980 (49/22/29), 1990 (44/22/34). 🔢 HOW IT'S CALCULATED Global aggregate share = population-weighted average across all countries with available labor-force data. The ILO modeled estimates fill gaps via econometric imputation for countries missing direct surveys. Each annual percentage is normalized to exactly 100% to eliminate rounding drift before rendering. Each of the 1,000 dots is assigned to a cluster based on the exact percentage share that year. When the share changes, dots are reassigned and animate smoothly to their new cluster — visualizing real workforce migration at a 1-dot-per-0.1% resolution. 📅 DATA COVERAGE • 1950–1990: Interpolated annual values between 5 published decadal anchors. Pre-1991 data should be read as a smooth trend, not year-by-year observations. • 1991–2025: Annual ILO modeled estimates — real data points. #workforce #jobs #employment #agriculture #industry #services #economy
