For those who may not have understood the meaning behind my video, I’m speaking out against leblou, or forced feeding, a practice found in Mauritania that involves making young girls gain a huge amount of weight, sometimes from childhood. In Mauritania, women’s body size has historically been associated with beauty, as well as with high social status. Among certain Mauritanian communities, particularly Arab communities, this practice is deeply rooted in the culture, to the point that, in some families, girls are sent directly to fattening houses with the purpose of being fattened. In many cases, the practice is linked to marriage. In these fattening houses, girls can be forced to consume up to 16,000 calories a day and, if they refuse, may be subjected to physical punishment. Besides being dangerous, this practice is immoral, as it takes place within a context where child marriages still exist.
