Healthy relationships require both people to understand that love isn’t only about what you receive—it’s also about what you consistently give. There’s plenty of conversation about what a good man should provide in a relationship: loyalty, communication, affection, protection, effort, emotional support, and respect. Those things absolutely matter. But men need to feel loved, appreciated, respected, desired, supported, and emotionally safe too. At the same time, this isn’t exclusively a problem with women. Plenty of men grow up learning what they expect from a girlfriend or wife without ever learning how to become a healthy partner themselves. That’s why relationships struggle when either person enters with a long list of expectations for their partner and very little reflection on what they’re bringing in return. Love works best when both people regularly ask themselves not only, “Am I being treated the way I deserve?” but also, “Am I treating this person the way they deserve?” The strongest relationships aren’t built around one person constantly proving their worth to the other. They’re built when two people understand that being loved well comes with the responsibility of learning how to love well in return.
