Oxygen Delivery Devices Every Nurse Should Know! Not all oxygen delivery devices provide the same amount of oxygen. Choosing the appropriate device depends on the patient’s oxygenation needs and clinical condition. Here are three commonly used oxygen delivery devices: 1. Nasal Cannula Flow rate: 1–6 L/min Approximate FiO₂: 24–44% Commonly used for patients requiring low concentrations of supplemental oxygen. It allows patients to eat, drink, and talk comfortably. 2. Simple Face Mask Flow rate: 5–10 L/min Approximate FiO₂: 35–60% Delivers a higher oxygen concentration than a nasal cannula. A minimum flow of 5 L/min is necessary to reduce carbon dioxide rebreathing. 3. Non-Rebreather Mask Flow rate: 10–15 L/min Approximate FiO₂: Up to approximately 60–90%, depending on mask fit and oxygen delivery. Used when high concentrations of oxygen are required, particularly in emergencies. The reservoir bag must remain partially inflated during inspiration. Important Nursing Considerations: * Monitor SpO₂, respiratory rate, work of breathing, and patient response. * Ensure the oxygen device fits correctly. * Check oxygen flow rates and tubing connections. * For most acutely ill adults, the target SpO₂ is 94–98%. For patients at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure, a target of 88–92% is commonly recommended pending appropriate assessment. Remember: Oxygen is a medication and should be administered and titrated according to the patient’s condition, prescribed targets, and clinical protocols. Save this guide for your next clinical shift and share it with a nursing student!
