It's to do with travel. A strait line on that map is a straight line on earth. I means you don't have to be able to do calculus to use one.

when it was made, it wasn't to do with race, it is just what happens when you make a sphere into a square (not denying that's why we use it though)

Dylan they stretch the corners out to make a sphere a rectangle. My grandpa actually has a decently accurate rectangle map but not a perfect one

the common maps used are based on the Mercator projection which by far isn't perfect but it's a great map for navigation as it preserves shape

If you grab a globe (and it should be on printed maps) thereโs grids on it. Those grids get wider the further from the centre but the scale used...
