PTFE Oil Seal Installation - Don’t Ruin It! • In this video, we take a closer look at the process of replacing an oil seal on a shaft. It doesn’t matter which shaft or which vehicle the seal comes from - this is a common and routine operation that mechanics perform very often. However, one of the biggest challenges in this job is removing the old oil seal safely from its seat without damaging the shaft surface. • Here, I demonstrate how to do this properly using a specialized tool from Stahlmaxx (part number 116542). This tool makes the removal process significantly easier and, most importantly, helps protect the working surface of the shaft from scratches or damage. There is also a similar version of this tool for smaller oil seals - supplied under a single part number with two interchangeable hook keys. The entire process is shown quickly, cleanly, and accurately. • As a practical example, the video features a 1.4 TSI engine, where we replace the camshaft oil seal on the water pump side. It is important to note that the original seal used here is a springless PTFE (Teflon-coated) oil seal. These seals must be installed only with a proper installation sleeve or drift, as their sealing lip is very sensitive to damage. In addition, light preparation of the shaft surface is allowed - in our case, dirt and light corrosion were present, which were carefully removed using Scotch-Brite, a permitted method when working with PTFE seals.
