And using chemical propaganda, they're working together to convert the forest floor into their ant nectar farms. Usually, Acrobat Ants, Crematogaster and Carpenter Ants, Camponotus are mortal enemies. Carpenter ants use jaws to attack the small acrobats, which retaliate with toxic gas. Two species worked out a truce despite species barriers. Modgliani acrobat ants and red legged carpenter ants live together and even share food mouth to mouth. What makes this partnership work is good chemistry. The Acrobat Ant produce a cross-species pheromone called crematoenones, which calm the carpenter ants down. Each species takes on different roles. The agile acrobat ants are better at finding food, and fan out across the treetops, while the larger carpenter ants take on guard duty and become moving nectar tanks, storing nectar the other workers collect from tie plants, which secrete a nectar for ants on their leaves. The joint colonies have learned to grow their own food. Working together, the ants are planting tie plant seeds around their nests to produce reliable crops of nectar.
