Happy Thanksgiving! It’s November and that can only mean one thing; it’s time for Ushy Gushy mushroom season once again! This is the time of year I pay tribute to the multitude of impressively goopy jelly fungi! These gelatinous growths belong to the Tremellaceae family, which are evolutionarily ancient mushrooms that occur on decaying wood. The ecology of these fungi is fascinating as they are actually parasitizing the mycelium of other species in the wood (as opposed to rotting the wood itself) and in their asexual/haploid state they can exist as single celled yeasts capable of causing disease in humans. Jelly fungi are extremely adaptable, able to dehydrate and reconstitute whenever there is moisture. They can grow for months at a time, forming big floppy invaginated blobs that slowly disperse their spores. . I recognize these kinds of videos are somewhat polarizing. Some people love the squishy squelchy noises while others find them revolting or downright disgusting. As part of my educational strategy to expose people to mushrooms, this video is intended to be emotionally evocative.
