Imagine watching Lagos in 1960 and suddenly, Haruna Ishola’s voice fills the screen. This footage comes from Bound for Lagos, a 1960 film directed by Edric Connor, commissioned around Nigeria’s independence and then comes Ishola one of the defining voices of Apala music. Apala had grown from Yoruba Muslim musical traditions, but by the time Ishola rose to prominence, it had become a powerful expression of Yoruba culture and identity. Ishola deliberately kept Western instruments out of his sound, relying on traditional instruments like the talking drum, agidigbo, bells and shakers. At a time when British colonial influence was everywhere, here was a Nigerian sound that refused to sound British. And somehow, watching this footage today, you realise Lagos was already documenting the birth of a cultural identity that would outlive colonial rule. Would you call Apala a form of cultural resistance or simply music staying true to its roots? Sources: British Film Institute (BFI); research on Haruna Ishola and Apala music. #HistoricalLagos #LagosHistory #HarunaIshola #Apala #NigerianHistory YorubaHistory Lagos Nigeria NigerianMusic AfricanHistory HistoryOfNigeria
