The Girl in the Mirror Every morning she walked past the mirror. Some days she caught a glimpse of herself. Most days she didn’t. She saw the woman who carried everyone’s burdens before her own. The woman who remembered appointments, packed lunches, solved problems at work, cared for animals that depended on her, cheered from the sidelines, stayed up late worrying, and woke up early doing it all again. She had become so good at taking care of everyone else that she forgot to look for the little girl she used to be. Then one ordinary afternoon, she knelt in front of the old mirror. Instead of her reflection, there she was. A little girl with long brown pigtails, bright eyes, and a smile so genuine it could melt years of self-doubt. The woman stared in disbelief. The little girl simply smiled. “I knew you’d come back.” The woman laughed softly through unexpected tears. “You… remember me?” The little girl tilted her head. “I never forgot you.” “But I left you behind.” “No,” the little girl whispered. “Life got loud. You got busy. There’s a difference.” The woman looked down at her hands—the same hands that had worked endless hours, held frightened animals, hugged her children, wiped away tears, and built a life from determination. “I’m so tired,” she admitted. The little girl reached her tiny hand toward the glass. “I know.” “I don’t always feel enough.” “You were always enough.” “I don’t recognize myself anymore.” The little girl smiled even bigger. “That’s because you’ve been looking at yourself through everyone else’s eyes.” Silence filled the room. Outside, the afternoon sun spilled golden light across the floor. “Do you know what I miss?” the little girl asked. The woman shook her head. “The way you used to laugh so hard your stomach hurt. The way you’d stop to watch butterflies. The way you’d sing when no one was listening. The dreams you thought were too silly to tell anyone.” The woman’s eyes filled with tears. “I don’t know how to get back to her.” The little girl leaned closer to the mirror. “You don’t have to come back.” “Why?” “Because I never left.” The woman closed her eyes. For the first time in years, she wasn’t mourning the girl she used to be. She was meeting the girl who had been waiting for her all along. When she opened her eyes again, the mirror reflected only her own face. But something had changed. The smile she wore wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t practiced. It was familiar. And somewhere deep inside her heart, a little girl with brown pigtails laughed, knowing she would never have to wait alone again. ❤️#fyp #girlinthemirror
