É descobrir como ser respeitado por alguém que já estava no Exército antes mesmo de ele nascer. Um ano de serviço. Do outro lado, um sargento de 45 anos, com 25 de carreira. Na hierarquia, a conta é simples. O tenente tem um posto superior. O sargento deve cumprir as ordens legítimas, mesmo sendo muito mais velho e experiente. Mas na prática existe uma diferença enorme entre ter autoridade e saber liderar. O veterano conhece o quartel. Conhece a rotina. Já passou por situações que o oficial mais novo ainda nem consegue imaginar. E de repente precisa receber instruções de alguém que poderia ser seu filho. Para quem está começando, isso também pode ser desconcertante. A estrela no ombro garante uma posição. Não garante admiração. Por isso, o desafio daquele jovem não era fazer alguém chamá-lo de senhor. Isso o regulamento já resolvia. Era conseguir que o respeito continuasse existindo mesmo quando ninguém estivesse cobrando formalidade. Aprender a ouvir quem tinha mais estrada. Saber a hora de decidir. Assumir a responsabilidade quando alguma coisa desse errado. E principalmente não usar a patente para esconder a própria insegurança. Porque um comandante pode impor uma ordem. Mas confiança não se consegue simplesmente apontando para a estrela no uniforme. Ela aparece no convívio. Na maneira de tratar a tropa. Na disposição para aprender sem abrir mão de comandar. Talvez seja essa uma das partes menos conhecidas da carreira militar. Às vezes, o mais jovem da sala é quem precisa tomar a decisão. E o mais experiente é quem precisa executá-la. O desafio é fazer os dois entenderem que respeito e hierarquia não precisam disputar espaço. Aos 19 anos, ele já tinha autoridade para comandar. Mas ainda estava aprendendo algo que leva muito mais tempo.
