It’s been 4 days since I lost you to cancer. It came out of nowhere, and I had to watch you deteriorate within just a few days. You were only 8 years old. You were the one Kevin chose from the accidental litter Riley & Charlie had. I had you from the moment you came out of Riley. I worked from home, and my happy place was always being home with you four. Now that you’re gone, I have a paw-sized hole in my heart, and the house feels empty. I cry most times I walk up the stairs because my shadow’s nails aren’t clicking on the hardwood behind me anymore. I still haven’t cooked—one of my favorite things to do—because who is going to sneak cucumbers out of the fridge behind my back when I accidentally leave it open? I know in time I’ll heal. And I know there are people who don’t understand and will say, “She was just a dog.” But you were never just a dog. You were part of my routine. Part of my home. Part of my life. I don’t have human children yet, but you were my fur baby. I love you, I love you, I love you. And I hate that this came out of nowhere. I wish I’d had time to at least mentally prepare for your departure. But I guess this is life—and this was my worst nightmare. No one prepares you for grief. It comes in waves—sometimes intense, sometimes gentle. But if grief is evidence of how deeply and how fiercely I loved you, then I’d choose to love you again and again, knowing it would eventually hurt this much. Because Bailey, you sure stole a piece of my heart.
