The family of a missing man with Down syndrome is suing a care agency and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) after he was trapped in a locked station room for six days. In October 2023, 31-year-old Rashawn Williams went missing after wandering away from his caregiver. Surveillance footage showed him entering the Glenmont Metro Station. According to the lawsuit, Williams tried to ask a station manager for help, but the employee reportedly ignored him to continue a personal phone call. Frustrated, Williams walked further into the station. He ended up opening a door to a secure emergency area, which locked automatically behind him. For six days, Williams remained trapped in complete darkness without access to food, water, or restroom facilities. He suffered severe dehydration, physical exhaustion, and an insect infestation in his hair due to the unsanitary conditions. Police officers and station staff eventually discovered Williams inside the locked stairwell area on October 26, 2023. His family describes the incident as causing lasting psychological trauma, comparing his severe isolation to solitary confinement. The lawsuit alleges that WMATA failed to follow basic safety protocols, properly monitor camera feeds, and inspect station rooms, which directly led to his unnecessary confinement. Do you think public transit systems should face stricter safety protocols and mandatory room checks to prevent vulnerable passengers from becoming trapped? Share your thoughts respectfully in the comments below.
