Here are some of my favorite images from the last backpacking trip of the season, to one of the most beautiful alpine lakes I’ve ever seen, deep in the wild Weminuche Wilderness and San Juan Mountains of Colorado. I had first seen this lake on Google maps three years ago and was drawn to how blue and clear the water was, and how massive the mountains were around it. I was also surprised at how very little trip reports there were, which added to the intrigue, since most places this beautiful are typically well known and photographed often. I had been planning to attempt this trek for the last two summers, but every time, my schedule filled up and I had to put it on hold. This year, when a window of opportunity opened along with good weather, I decided to take it, and enlisted the company of my good friend @nickreedy, who I knew would be up for the challenge and had plenty of backcountry experience.
But now looking back, saying it was a challenge to get to this lake is an understatement, and it truly was one of the most difficult backpacking trips I’ve done. The trek itself was long and steep, but when we got 2/3s of the way there, we realized the trail was no longer maintained, so we had to bushwhack several miles to basecamp. We also were hit with snow and thunderstorms, which made the experience even more fun. But in the end, standing above a place I’d dreamed about for years made it all worth it. The lake and surrounding absolutely blew our minds, exceeded expectations, and was a place I will always remember fondly. It was even more special to experience it with great conditions (after the storm lifted), with no other humans for miles—a true escape that I will never forget. So this is your PSA to do hard things, challenge yourself, and pursue your dreams, big or small, even if they are quite daunting. Those journeys typically lead to the most memorable and life-changing outcomes. #visitcolorado #colorado #rockies #backpacking #beautifuldestinations
