On August 12, 2021, police in Moab, Utah, responded to a 911 call reporting a man striking a woman. The woman was Gabby Petito, just 22 years old. The man was her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, 23. Body-camera footage captured Gabby crying, visibly distressed, and struggling to explain what had happened. Police separated the couple for the night. No charges were filed. Five weeks later, Gabby was dead. 💔 Gabby and Brian had set out on a cross-country road trip that summer, traveling in a white Ford van and sharing their adventures on social media. But behind the photos, something had gone terribly wrong. Her family last heard from her on August 30. On September 1, Brian returned to Florida in Gabby’s van. He came home without her. On September 11, Gabby’s family reported her missing. As the search intensified, investigators publicly identified Brian as a person of interest. But he was no longer cooperating with the search in the way authorities wanted, and he disappeared before investigators could question him further. On September 19, searchers discovered Gabby’s remains in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest. The coroner ruled her death a homicide, determining that she died from blunt-force injuries to the head and neck and manual strangulation. She had been gone for weeks. Brian Laundrie was found dead in a Florida nature preserve on October 20, 2021. Investigators later recovered a notebook containing a written confession in which he claimed responsibility for Gabby’s death. In January 2022, the FBI closed its investigation, concluding that Laundrie was solely responsible for her death. In March 2024, Gabby’s parents reached a $3 million settlement in their wrongful-death lawsuit against the Laundrie family. But no settlement could bring their daughter home. 💔 Gabby’s story remains a heartbreaking reminder that what we see on social media is never the whole story. Behind a smiling photograph, someone may be struggling in ways the world cannot see. It also leaves us with difficult questions about domestic violence, the warning signs that can be missed, and whether more could have been done. Gabby was someone's daughter. Someone's friend. A young woman with a future ahead of her. She deserved to come home. 🕊️ May Gabby Petito never be forgotten. What do you think this case taught us about recognizing the warning signs of domestic violence and taking reports of abuse seriously? #GabbyPetito #JusticeForGabby #RememberingGabby #DomesticViolenceAwareness #EndDomesticViolence
