I have been seeing more and more baby horses finding themselves in the slaughter pipeline. Horses are bred into existence to perform for humans. When they come out looking like this (poor conformation, dropped fetlocks, twisted legs, umbilical hernia), people send them to slaughter because they know a horse like this will never perform to the utmost degree. A horse like this will never be a rodeo champion. A horse like this will never be a high level eventer. A horse like this will never win the derby. So, a horse like this gets thrown out like trash. I was contacted about this baby a couple of weeks ago. At first, I was opposed to taking him in because we were at max capacity for equines. We had just rescued Enola, the senior mustang. It just didn’t seem responsible. But then, our hearts were shattered when we lost one of our oldest horses, Ranger. He was in his late thirties. We have been monitoring him closely due to noticing a gradual decline (weight loss, some pain due to arthritis) but we thought we had more time with him. He blatantly was telling us he was ready and to let him leave his broken body. Before continuing, I want to thank his long term sponsor, Jane, and the offsite crew, Karen and Eric, for loving Ranger and taking such good care of him for so many years. I took Ranger’s passing as a sign to try to help this baby horse. His passing opened up a spot for another horse in need. Here is the issue we face now… This little one needs a lot of medical attention. He needs a physical, bloodwork and routine vaccines. He also needs to be gelded (he is a colt/stallion). And above all else, he will need umbilical hernia surgery. We can’t forget how much it will cost to feed him and provide him with proper care for the rest of his life. We are a sanctuary which means the animals remain here with us for life. So, here I am — asking all of you to help us successfully complete the very first rescue mission of 2024. Can we get the two surgeries and extensive medical care this baby needs?
