We can get our kid to “RESPECT” us — where they are always obedient + compliant — immediately, never disrespectful— we can do it. Buuut the shame + fear required to force our kid into submission to us will CRUSH their self worth. They INTERNALIZE that shame + fear. When we shut down ANY + ALL disrespect, making our kid feel like they “should be ashamed of themselves” for that behavior – then we ALSO, accidentally — shut down their body’s ability to self-regulate. Why? Because shame devastates. When we make our kids feel ashamed, it makes them feel like — “When I can control myself, behave + be ‘good’.…my parent loves me + I deserve love. I’m good enough. BUT when I can’t control myself, behave, be ‘good’ + act *like this*…then my parent doesn’t love me, I don’t deserve love when I act like this + I’m worthless (without worth).” Y’all, if they have to choose between being able to self-regulate + feeling like things are okay between you…they’ll choose to bottle up their feelings (until their body can’t hold the stress + FORCES the release). So what do we do??! We put on our Perspectacles + see the disrespect as The Resistance. We remember that kids RESIST (parents + rules) to RELEASE (stress + big feelings) to REGULATE (their body) We set AND hold strong boundaries + consequences around aggression, hurting people with their body or words, etc. WHILE we ALLOW The RESISTANCE SO our kids can RELEASE the stress + big feelings that are driving this whole thing, allowing our kid to REGULATE. This can look like— “Lower your voice. I’m not going to let you talk to me like that. I see you, you’re overwhelmed + it’s okay to be upset. It’s safe to release these feelings with me. I’ve got you. I love you.” ➡️ Go to the place on my for details about my Disrespect Work Shop ! I’ll teach you the keys to disarming the disrespect — I’ll show you how to own the hell out of your boundaries with love — so you can raise kids who know their worth, respect others, and don’t crumble under shame.
