When it isn’t safe to be who we are, we self-abandon. Self- abandonment is when we neglect our wants, needs, feelings & values. This can happen when we are repeatedly blamed, shamed, punished, abandoned or rejected when we authentically express ourselves — leading to feelings & beliefs of unworthiness and unlovability. Because we NEED to be connected to our caregivers for safety and survival,  we suppress and disconnect from our core self and mold ourselves into a version of ourselves that can be accepted. We may become extremely skilled at reading the room and becoming who we need to be to blend in or make other people happy. While this can keep us connected to others, we might find we: - Struggle with self-trust - Continually have unmet needs in relationships - Caretake constantly in relationships - Supress our emotions and truths - Feel out of touch with who we are This is NOT a flaw in you. This is a very skilled protector part that developed as a SURVIVAL resource when it was not emotionally, socially or physically safe to be your authentic self.  When we build a relationship with our younger self AND these protective parts, we can begin shifting the focus from “do they like me?” to “do I like them? Do I feel safe around them?
