it is done to the piglets unless the a couple days after the pig have been born. it hurts them for a second when it is being done and then he stops

we do similar with sheep. it helps with theft mostly. we tag 1 ear for sex and year of birth. we ear mark the other for owner ID.

They do this to lab rats and mice a lot of the time as well to help keep track of them! we had to learn about it in vet school
