John Leguizamo Recalls Near Fistfight With Patrick Swayze on the Set of To Wong Foo In a 2010 interview on George Tonight, John Leguizamo revealed that tensions ran high between him and co-star Patrick Swayze during the filming of the 1995 cult classic To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. The film, which follows the cross-country journey of three drag queens, featured Leguizamo, Swayze, and Wesley Snipes in full drag — and apparently, full drama as well. Leguizamo admitted that he and Swayze "were about to duke it out" over creative differences that nearly escalated into a physical altercation. “We were about to fisticuff each other, dude,” he said, laughing. The most absurd part? It almost happened while both actors were dressed in full drag costumes. “You were gonna punch out in red hats — dressed like chicks,” Leguizamo said, acknowledging how hilariously surreal the moment was. According to Leguizamo, Swayze even reflected on the incident in his biography, describing the moment from his own perspective. “It was great for me to see,” Leguizamo noted, “to see what he thought of that moment.” He also jokingly recalled that Swayze had called him “a little hyperactive wetback” during the heated exchange, which Leguizamo labeled as both funny and racist — while admitting he wasn’t innocent either, saying he had thrown terms like “cracker” and “honky” right back. “It was all in the moment,” he said. Despite the clash, the story adds another memorable chapter to the behind-the-scenes legacy of To Wong Foo — a film beloved not only for its heart and camp, but now for the fact that two of its stars nearly brawled in heels and wigs.
