I had so much fun doing a weekly shop with my competition winner Sara at her local supermarket!! Extra virgin olive oil is absolutely fine for cooking, I use it all the time but be mindful you’re not paying a premium for a blended oil which might be low quality!The Olive oil industry is not well regulated (similar to the honey industry!) and so there are lots of low quality extra virgin olive oils on the shelves which are blended oils. The issue with blended oils is that some have been shown to be diluted with cheaper oils to make manufacturing the product cheaper. Because the regulation is so poor, we just don’t really know what we’re getting with an Extra Virgin Olive oil that’s been blended from multiple countries. If you want to ensure you’re getting the health benefits when paying a premium for Extra Virgin Olive oil, make sure it is from one region and even better look out for independent certifications like the PDO one on the Dunnes Simply Better Extra Virgin Olive oil. For an oil to be awarded PDO status, it must be grown, produced and bottled in the designated area and it also must meet strict requirements in terms of varietals, method of production and overall quality. So by choosing this you are guaranteed to be getting the real deal. And this Dunnes EVOO is significantly cheaper than Filippo Berio one which is a blend!! You also ideally want to buy your EVOO in a dark coloured glass bottle (or tin) because the polyphenols in EVOO start to degrade when exposed to light, heat, and oxygen during storage.
