When God created the fish, He spoke to the sea. When He created the trees, He spoke to the earth. But when God created man, He did something completely different. Do you know what it was? The Bible says: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” Genesis 1:26 KJV God made man in His own image. Why? Because from the very beginning, man was created to have a relationship with God. So what happens when man leaves God? Death. A person may still be alive, but no longer belong to God. When Adam and Eve sinned, God had said: “for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:17 KJV But after they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, their bodies did not fall down immediately. So what died? Their spirit died. From that day on, they began to fear God. They began to hide from God. They no longer dared to face God. The close relationship between man and God was broken from that moment. That is spiritual death. Physical death was only the result that would surely come later. The most frightening thing is not the death of the body. It is when a person is still alive, but can no longer feel God. They no longer desire prayer. They no longer love God’s word. They no longer seek God’s will. They still live as usual. They still work as usual. They still make money as usual. But their heart grows colder and colder toward God. They become more and more numb to sin. They have less and less hunger for God’s word. Even when they hear a warning, they no longer feel anything. That is a very dangerous sign. When a person leaves God, they are not truly free. Because when a person no longer belongs to God, they will be bound by sin, pulled away by the world, and deceived and trampled by Satan.
