BAN HOSSANA FROM INTERNATIONAL EVENTS UNTIL ANIMAL CRUELTY ENDS In the city of Hossana, Ethiopia, horrific acts of animal cruelty are being carried out under the pretext of rabies control. Individuals who hate animals, together with government kebele and polices authorities, have reportedly been rounding up dogs—including owned and vaccinated pets—from their homes and killing them in brutal ways. Dogs have been hanged from trees with ropes, beaten to death with sticks, and left to suffer unimaginable pain. These acts are not only cruel—they are a profound failure of humanity. What is even more disturbing is that some of these killings were carried out by children while family members stood by recording videos. Neither the children nor the adults appeared to show compassion for the fear and suffering of the animals. This tragedy extends far beyond the suffering of dogs. It raises an urgent question about the values being passed on to the next generation. When children are encouraged to participate in violence against defenseless animals, cruelty risks becoming normalized instead of compassion. Rabies is a serious public health concern, but brutality is not a solution. Humane, science-based approaches—including vaccination, sterilization, responsible pet ownership, and public education—are internationally recognized as effective ways to protect both people and animals. For these reasons, we call on the international community to take a principled stand. We urge international organizations, conference and event organizers, sports and cultural institutions, travel agencies, and ethical travelers to ban Hossana from hosting international events until authorities end these acts of cruelty, hold those responsible accountable, and adopt humane animal welfare policies. This is not a campaign against the people of Hossana. It is a call for accountability and meaningful change. No city should enjoy international recognition while extreme animal cruelty continues without consequences. We also call upon international media organizations, animal welfare groups, and human rights advocates to investigate these events, report the truth, and help amplify the voices of those who cannot speak for themselves.
