It's all the same thing (pool salt, water softener). But ice melt does have magnesium in it. So never buy the more expensive salt,

It’ll work fine but the water softener rocks are a lot bigger so I recommend breaking it up before spreading it.

won't work as good at lower temperatures, you'll have to use 30%-40% more to work just as good. In an emergency go for it.

i have.....it does little on its own. I boiled mine in to a brine, and used a hudson sprayer to apply it it was marginally effective...
