“I am grateful to the United States Senate for approving vital aid to Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Senate yesterday passed a long-delayed $95 billion package with wide bipartisan support after both sides of Capitol Hill have struggled for months to send aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The legislation was signed into law today by US President Joe Biden. Its passage is a significant victory for the US president, congressional Democrats and Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, who long pushed to send aid to Ukraine even as the right wing of his party increasingly soured on support for Kyiv. “Tonight, may Vladimir Putin regret the day he questioned American resolve,” the Majority Leader, Senator Chuck Schumer said. “I thank Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for their strong leadership in advancing this bipartisan legislation, as well as all US Senators on both sides of the aisle who voted in favor of it,” Zelensky said. He added: “This vote reinforces America’s role as a beacon of democracy and the leader of the free world.” Zelensky also stated: “I am also grateful to all Americans who continue to support Ukraine and recognize that the historical significance of this bill extends beyond politics. I equally appreciate President Biden’s support and look forward to the bill being signed soon and the next military aid package matching the resoluteness that I always see in our negotiations.” Included in the bill is also a possible ban of the popular video app TikTok. It will give TikTok’s owner — Chinese company ByteDance — nine months to sell the platform in order not to be banned. Both Republicans and Democrats have claimed that TikTok threatens national security, arguing the platform could be used by Beijing to spy on Americans and manipulate public debate. #zelensky #digitaldiplomacy
